Police investigating after social media threat made to middle school in Sandy

SANDY (News4Utah)- There is extra police presence at Indian Middle School in Sandy Friday after school officials say a threat to the school was circulating on Instagram.

Thursday night parents and students who saw the threat alerted Canyons School District officials. They say a user on a newly made account called IHMS 2017 was sending threatening messages to students.

Canyons School District spokesperson Jeff Haney says parents were notified.

“We will always err on the side of caution..we have to take these precautions and so many people in this community had seen the post and it had circulated so fast…and there’s obviously a heightened awareness about school safety so we immediately sent out a message to all the parents”

Friday, attendance at the school is down significantly, he said.

School officials say they were alerted thanks to tips in the SafeUT app. If you haven’t downloaded the app, you can do so here.
