MIDVALE, Utah (ABC4 News) – A man knocked out an officer during a traffic stop Thursday morning, according to police.
The incident happened shortly before 10 a.m. near 7351 South Frontage Road in Midvale.
Sgt. Melody Gray of the Unified Police Department said it began when an officer noticed a vehicle with expired registration and initiated a traffic stop.
The driver fled at first but later stopped in a parking lot. The officer approached the driver to handcuff him and that is when officials say the driver hit the officer.
Sgt. Gray said a short struggle ensued and the officer was knocked unconscious but was able to come back to consciousness a short time later.
A witness told officials they saw the suspect run away and was able to point other responding officers in the direction he fled. They were able to apprehend the driver and take him into custody.
It is not clear why the man tried to flee according to Sgt. Gray because he does not have a criminal history and the vehicle does not appear to be stolen.
The driver’s identity has not yet been released.
The officer was sent to a hospital to be examined as a precaution but is doing well according to officials.
This is a developing story. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
