MURRAY (ABC4 Utah News) – A murder suspect is on the run after a man was murdered Wednesday evening in broad daylight near a busy intersection.

Police say it began with an ambush.

Officer Kenny Bass of the Murray Police Department described what happened.

“At about 5:30 a car pulled up in the parking lot of the Check City across the street eastbound,” Officer Bass said. “An individual approached that car, opened the car door and fired a gunshot in there striking the driver. The driver fled from there straight across to the east across State Street, crashing into the cars you see here.”

The victim was wounded in the head and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Bob Bailey, 9 weeks removed from open heart surgery was driving his blue BMW north on State Street when the victim’s red car hit three other vehicles and then his.

“He accelerated, came across all these lanes, hitting all of us and ended up hitting me the last,” Bailey said.

“The assailant who shot him was reportedly running through the parking lot of Tim Dahle (Auto Center).”

Fortunately nobody else was injured.

Officers and K-9s launched an  extensive yard to yard search up and down Box Elder Street on the ground and from the air but could not locate the suspect, described as a short white male – but a man driving his sport utility vehicle nearby is convinced he spotted him.

“He did have the khaki style pants, black jacket,” Jerry Gunnon told ABC4 Utah News. “Seemed real nervous on a fast run. He wasn’t wearing like jogging outfits or anything but yeah. He was moving.”

“We’ve got an individual out there who is obviously not hesitant to use deadly force against another person. That’s the big concern,” Officer Bass said. “Time is always an issue because the sooner we can get a hold of him you know, the quicker this thing comes to a close.”

Thursday, police released a surveillance photos of the suspect.

As for a motive, police say this could have been drug related.

Meanwhile, officers investigating the crash scene are saying that with that busy intersection at that time of day, it could have been much, much worse.
