SPANISH FORK, Utah (ABC4 Utah)- It was a fight over a girl that brought two teens out to the high school parking lot early Friday morning.
And it soon escalated into gunfire. Spanish Fork police said the 19-year old who was firing his weapon ended up killing himself with his own handgun.
“(I) did some things with a girlfriend and I take responsibility for that,” said Brandon who was shot by the 19-year old.
He said the 19-year old and himself met at the Spanish Fork High School parking lot. Several others were also there as well according to Brandon.
“He ended up saying ‘you know what I want to do,'” Brandon said.
The 19-year old had a gun according to Brandon.
“He had it aimed at my head and the first shot clicked and it didn’t go,” he said. “I reached for the gun and he pulled back and put his arm up and shot me in the arm.”
He said his arm went numb and grabbed it and ran for cover.
“He fired a couple of more rounds at my buddy,” he said. “I don’t know man, he just took off.”
Spanish Fork police arrived at the scene and began looking for the suspect. Lt. Matt Johnson said they learned the suspect fled to a home and got into another vehicle. Police said the 19-year old was being driven by a friend. He said they were spotted in Payson where police and the Utah County sheriff deputies pulled him over.
“(They) were ordering them out of the car,” said Lt. Johnson. “The driver was complying and the passenger who was the suspect in the shooting of the high school, discharged the firearm and it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound and he is deceased at this time.”
Police are continuing their investigation. Lt. Johnson said they are not releasing the name of the 19 year old until next of kin are notified.
