SPANISH FORK, (News4Utah) – Police say an officer shot a Springville man in the shoulder after he crashed into a deputy who was standing outside of his patrol car early Monday morning.

That man has been identified as 38-year-old Wade Leon Willis.

It all started when officers in Spanish Fork located a car near 200 East & Center Street that had been involved in a chase Sunday afternoon in American Fork.

Officers say they chased the suspect driving the car but lost him, a deputy later located the suspect and attempted to pull him over.

Police say Willis tried to drive away and hit an officer who was standing outside of his patrol car.

“As the suspect drove away he ran over the foot of a Deputy,” a press release from Utah County Sheriff’s Office said. “The car also hit the Deputy, causing him to roll onto the hood of the car and into the windshield, shattering the windshield.”

That’s when police say another deputy fired at least one shot at Willis, striking him in the shoulder. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Payson and later flown to a Provo hospital, officials said.

Police say the suspect will be taken and booked into the Utah County Jail after he is treated.
