CENTERVILLE (ABC4 News) – Centerville police say a 5-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by an SUV early Friday morning.
It happened in a neighborhood just off of the 2000 block of Frontage Road.
Chief Paul Child says the girl has an obvious femur fracture and an apparent brain injury.
ABC4’s Jason Nguyen spoke with one of the first responders who lives in the neighborhood.
“It’s really hard. I have a 5-year-old myself who goes to Reading Elementary and walks up to the school in the mornings and she is the exact same age. It is pretty hard to see,” said Sergeant Christopher Pope with the Davis County Sheriff’s Office.
Sgt. Pope is a deputy and paramedic who just finished working the third shift and was sleeping when the crash happened.
“The next thing I knew, my kids were running in screaming at me telling me that someone had been hit by a vehicle,” he said.
Sgt. Pope rushed to his vehicle where he got his paramedic gear.
He added, “The little girl was still lying on the ground. Nobody yet had responded to her yet.”
He said neighbors automatically trusted him to do the right thing.
“She was kind of in and out not quite fully conscious and from there I just continued to assist and see if she had any spinal injuries or anything like that and trying to assist her mental status,” said Sgt. Pope.
The sergeant was on the phone with firefighters from South Davis Metro Fire Department explaining the girl’s injuries which included a broken leg.
That’s when all of the first responders called in a helicopter to take the girl to Primary Children’s Hospital.
Investigators don’t know why the girl was on the road at the time of the crash.
Chief Child says, “the driver of the Suburban did not see the child, but heard the thud upon hitting the child.”
The crash was witnessed by the girl’s older sister who rushed home to tell her mother.
Sgt. Pope said, “It is still really tough to see. The first thing I want to do even a block away is come home and give my daughter a hug and be thankful that she had been saved.”
Police say that driver remained on scene and is cooperating.
ABC4 News decided not to release the victim’s name out of respect for the family during this time.
