New tool makes getting a business license in Utah easier

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah(ABC4 News) Starting a business in Salt Lake City is now much easier thanks to a new tool called OpenCounter.   Ben Kolendar, Deputy Director of the Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development, and Nole Walkingshaw, Administrative Services and Communications Manager for the Department of Public Services, joined Emily Clark to talk about how it’s helping.

Just last month, over 2300 people in Salt Lake City alone applied for a new business license. A lot of those were small business licenses, and Kolendar says small businesses are so important to the local economy. But the biggest feedback the Department of Economic Development got from applicants was to make the process easier.

Walkingshaw developed a program that asks applicants a series of simple questions about zoning, the type of remodel that might need to happen, and the permits and fees that are required. Access to this program is all available online and on your phone. You will need an address of where the business will be located, and/or a use type (type of business).
