SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – Utah Governor Gary Herbert joined leaders of a new, high-tech gas refinery as they broke ground Tuesday for a new Tier 3 gas project.
Tier 3 gasoline has a limited amount of sulfur content which reduces harmful emissions. The Andeavor Refinery is the first of its kind in Utah to manufacture Tier 3 gasoline.
Once the refinery is completed, Utah drivers will have access to cleaner gasoline, which in theory would clean the air.

Donna Spangler, communications director for Utah’s Division of Air quality says the policy doesn’t alter the air quality standards that Utah must achieve.
“It also doesn’t change the Tier 3 standards for gasoline and autos currently being implemented,” she said. Spangler says Tier 3 will help reduce emissions from vehicles and power plants that burn fuel (NOx), particulate matter that can be inhaled (PM2.5), and gases emitted from certain solids and liquids (VOCs) in Utah’s airshed.
