MIDVALE (News4Utah) – The Utah-based company Overstock announced Wednesday they’ve invested in a car that gets 84 miles per gallon. The Elio Car is marketed as a commuter car; it has only three wheels, and costs only $7,500.
The engineer and Elio Motors President Paul Elio explained the great gas mileage, “It’s all about aerodynamics, so we sit two people front to back instead of side to side, highway speeds most of your fuel goes to moving air, so half as wide, half as much air.”
The company has kept the cost down by keeping the car extremely simple. It comes in two models, standard and automatic. Both are equipped with AC, power windows, stereo, cruise control, and more. The only catch: the company is still raising the capitol to start production. 66,000 people have already paid to reserve their car.
Elio says he recognizes that the size might be a turn-off but, “Every small car up to this point is saying, shame on you for driving a big truck, you should drive something small. This is an ‘and’ vehicle, a-n-d. You’re better off with an F-150 and and Elio than just an F-150.”
