DRAPER, Utah (News4Utah) – News agencies from across the country were in Utah Wednesday morning to witness one of Elizabeth Smart’s kidnappers being released from prison.
National news correspondents and paparazzi camped outside of the prison alongside local news stations, and hoped to capture the moment Wanda Barzee walked out of the gates.
The shot everyone was waiting to capture never happened.
Around 8:00 a.m., officials at the Utah State Prison sent out an email to confirm that Barzee was no longer an inmate at the prison and no one confirmed her whereabouts.
Barzee and Brian David Mitchell were arrested for kidnapping Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom in June of 2002. They were captured and Elizabeth was returned to her family in March of 2003.
The case has received national attention since the beginning.
News4Utah’s Brittany Johnson spoke with Clayton Sandell, a correspondent with ABC News, and Jim Moret, the chief correspondent with Inside Edition about the national attention the case has received. You can watch the interviews here:
