MURRAY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A law goes into effect May 2019 that will bring big changes to Utah roads allowing motorcycles to move between lanes when traffic is stopped.
On Wednesday night in Murray, riders gathered at Moto Station in partnership with Utah Highway Patrol for a night of education about “lane filtering.”
Officials say under the new law, motorcyclists can move between lanes to the front of traffic if traffic is stopped and if the speed limit in that area is 45 miles per hour or less.
The motorcycle must be going less than 15 miles per hour and can only pass vehicles that are completely stopped, according to officials.
“It sounds dangerous, but it’s actually hugely safer for the motorcyclists and it helps facilitate traffic flow. So, it kind of cuts down on congestion,” said Dave Palazolo.
Utah Highway Patrol says between 2011 and 2017, 1,288 motorcyclists were rear-ended, and many of them were seriously injured. Supporters say the law is all about keeping motorcyclists safe.
