Mom invents car seat cover to keep germs and messes at bay

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah(News4Utah) Anyone who drives around with a child in a car seat knows those little seats can get messy, especially if they’ve been playing in muddy snow or has gotten car sick. They can also be a cesspool for germs. Jinah Kim-Perek, the inventor of the Niko Easy Wash Children’s Car Seat Cover, shares her solution.

Kim-Perek says the concept of the Niko was born a couple years ago after a particularly messy day at the beach. Her youngest, Niko, who was 2 at the time, was covered head to toe in wet, sticky sand. As she was putting him into the car seat, she wished she had a towel to cover it, so he wouldn’t get sand all over. But, there wasn’t anything on the market to fit the bill. So Kim-Perek decided to create it herself!

According to a study by the University of Birmingham, researchers found an average of 100 potentially dangerous bacteria and mold – including ecoli and salmonella – living in each SQUARE CENTIMETER of toddler car seats! According to the study, that’s double the number found in the average toilet seat.  Another study by car seat manufacturer Maxi Cosi found that parents rarely wash their children’s car seat covers because the process of doing it is so cumbersome.

Tomorrow, May 1st, the Niko Easy Wash Children’s Car Seat Cover is launching on Kickstarter!!

Kim-Perek says two lucky winners will be selected to receive a package of FOUR Nikos each – one for you, one for your second car, one for the grandparents and one for your next baby shower gift! Just snap any photo of yourself or your family, and tag our show as well as @nikocover. Then, two winners with the best posts will be selected sometime this week and notified of their win!
