CEDAR CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A Nevada man with dementia who was reported missing died Saturday morning after a semitrailer slammed into his car.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers said they received reports at 5:05 a.m. that Leif Johansson, 62 was stopped in the right travel lane on I-15 northbound near mile marker 93 close to Cedar City.

Before Troopers could get to the scene they said they received another call that a UPS semi with triple trailer had struck Johansson’s silver passenger car.

Troopers said after the collision, the UPS semi jackknifed into the median with the front drive axle torn from the truck. The car was reportedly pushed off the right side of the road onto the shoulder and suffered extensive damage.

Medical units responded and extricated Johansson as officials say a medical helicopter responded to the scene as well.

Both crews from the ambulance crew and the helicopter crew attempted lifesaving measure but Johansson died on scene while authorities say the semi driver sustained minor injuries.

Johansson was listed as a missing endangered person from Henderson, Nevada with health issues and dementia, according to troopers.

UHP troopers are still investigating to find out why Johansson was stopped in the middle of the freeway.

This is a developing story. Updates will be posted as it becomes available.
