LAS VEGAS (KLAS)- The case of a missing 3-year-old Las Vegas boy has turned into a homicide investigation after his body was found in a remote area near Lake Mead early Monday morning, according to Metro Police.
Daniel Theriot was reported missing Sunday by his 20-year-old mother who told police he walked away while she was on the phone at Sunset Park Sunday morning.
In a Monday morning news conference, Metro Lt. Ray Spencer said police began to doubt the mother’s story around 1 p.m.
“At that point, we launched two separate investigations. We continued with the missing persons investigation however we launched a criminal investigation because we suspected there could be possible foul play involved,” he said.
Lt. Spencer said the mother, and her 40-year-old boyfriend are suspects in the murder and are being detained.
“It was absolutely disturbing how the child was killed, There is nothing accidental about the death of this child.”
Police believe the death of the child occurred about 12 hours prior to the 9-1-1 call from the mother.
The mother has a 2-year-old child who has been taken into protective custody.
The mother and boyfriend are facing child abuse charges for the 2-year-old as well as additional charges for Daniel Theriot. They are expected to be booked later Monday.
