WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 News) – There’s a new queen in town. Miss Gambia has been crowned Miss Africa Utah 2019.
The pageant took place Saturday at the Viridian Event Center in West Jordan.
Fatoumatta Barrow says being crowned Miss Africa Utah is more than just winning a crown and sash.
“I joined with the intention to educate and show the Utah community about my beautiful Country,The Gambia, which i accomplished. I had a passion and worked hard towards it. It’s also going to open many opportunities for me to work towards my platform.”
“My platform is “Breaking Barriers to Education.” It is to mentor and empower the youth to value the importance of education by building a foundation and providing resources that they lack. My goal is to reinforce the importance of education by combating barriers that affect it,” Barrow said.
Her plan is to start a nonprofit as a component of her platform.
The Miss Africa Utah Pageant was created to provide opportunities for African girls and refugees in Utah.
“Gloria Mensah and the GK Folks Foundation increased my confidence and love for my country. They have provided workshops that are not just beneficial for the pageant, but to develop real life skills. Ive learned a lot about the importance of true sisterhood and having fun, even while competing.”
