An alleged armed robbery suspect was shot by an officer early Tuesday morning, officials say.

The incident started after, police say, a Cottonwood Heights officer on his way to work noticed a man on a dirt bike who matched the description of a suspect accused of two armed robberies in Sandy.

Police say the description of the suspect came across his police radio.

The officer attempted to pull the alleged suspect over, but investigators say the man took off. That man has since been identified as 19-year-old Zane James.

The pursuit ended the area of 6647 South and 2200 East after officials say the officer shot James.

He was taken to the hospital in fair condition, police said.

Police say the officer that shot the suspect was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave.

After some digging, News4Utah has learned James was arrested last year for robbing five businesses. Click here to read the 2017 story.
