Man randomly attacked with golf club, suspect arrested

SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah)- A man is behind bars after police say he attacked another man with a golf club in downtown Salt Lake City. 

It happened Monday night around 7:45 p.m. at 141 East 200 South.

Police say the attack was unprovoked and that the victim didn’t even know the suspect.

“The suspect struck the victim in the head with a golf club before being subdued by passers-by, including a parking enforcement officer,” police said.

The suspect,  35-year-old Thomas J. Lopez, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner, false information, resisting arrest and public intoxication.

Officers say Lopez spit on a crime lab technician while his picture was being taken.
