Man in critical condition after Orem shooting

OREM (ABC4 Utah News) – One man is in critical condition and another is in custody after a shooting Thursday afternoon in Orem.

Police say the 53-year-old male victim and 60-year-old suspect Arthur Freek are related but they’re not saying how. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

The shooting happened Thursday afternoon about 1:30 either in or around a house near the intersection of 543 East, 1834 South.

Orem Police Lieutenant Craig Martinez says officers arrived within minutes.

“When our officers got here they actually found the victim was outside of the home on the front lawn,” Lt. Martinez told ABC4 Utah News. “The officer pulled his car up in front of the victim kind of to shield him from anybody. We got medical coming and found out the suspect was inside the home still armed with a handgun. Took us about 20 or 30 minutes but our negotiators were able to get him out of the home safely.”

Lt. Martinez says the victim was wounded in the chest. Neighbors were told to stay inside their homes while police negotiated Mr. Freek’s surrender.

On Thursday evening, the Orem PD tweeted that Freek was being booked into the Utah County Jail on charges of Attempted Murder and Domestic Violence.
