HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – He took matters into his own hands to prevent young girls from being raped.
“I think he’s a sick individual that was trying to sleep with 15-year-old girls,” said Coleman Butterfield.
Butterfield is talking about Steven Graham, who police allege dropped a note on a vehicle offering $70,000 to underage females for sex.
“I didn’t want my daughter taking chances of this guy contacting her,” said Butterfield.
When Butterfield saw a post online about the note placed on a vehicle, he decided to respond to the number listed.
“I said multiple times that I was a 15 year old girl and he said he was okay with it,” said Butterfield.
Butterfield collected text message evidence and even set up a meeting with Graham.
Butterfield believes his involvement helped police with their case.
“Offering $70,000 to a teenager — that’s a lot of money,” said UPD Sgt. Melody Gray.
“It’s really random – really random – its not something we see very often,” said Gray of the alleged crime.
“Most of what we see now is internet based,” she added.
Graham did have child pornography, according to court documents. And, this week, charges were filed against him.
Those include: enticing a minor, sexual battery and sexual exploitation of a minor.
Police don’t endorse citizens taking matters into their own hands.
Butterfield says he thinks he did the right thing.
“I think that somebody else would have been raped, or molested, or taken advantage of before something happened,” said Butterfield.
Police have issued a warrant for Graham’s arrest and hope to arrest him soon.
