CENTERVILLE, Utah (ABC4) – Police have released more information on their investigation into a road rage incident in Centerville on Monday evening.

Centerville Police say shortly after 8:15 p.m. Monday evening, a 44-year-old man in an F150 and a 20-year-old man in a Mitsubishi Lancer encountered each other in a Target parking lot.

“Some type of driving altercation occurred, and they became angry with each other,” Centerville Police report.

After reviewing the surveillance video, police determined the driver of the F150, identified as Shawn Paul Smith, followed the 20-year-old driver of the Mitsubishi Lancer into the parking lot.

Smith had originally told detectives that the driver of the Mitsubishi was the one who followed him into the parking lot and then pointed a gun at him.

Officers have now determined that no firearm was shown during the incident.

Police say the men drove across the roadway into the Target parking lot where the man driving the Lancer got out of his vehicle and crossed in front of the pickup truck.

Police said Smith then accelerated, running over the other driver and dragging him about 50 feet.

“After running over the other driver, Smith fled the area and did not contact the police to report the incident,” Centerville Police said in a news release to ABC4.

On Tuesday evening, officers arrested Smith at his home and booked him into the Davis County Jail on charges of second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree failure to remain at an accident with serious injury.

The man who was run over remains in the hospital with serious internal bleeding and broken bones. Police say he is expected to survive.
