SALT LAKE COUNTY (News4Utah)- An inmate who was being held in Salt Lake County Metro Jail is dead after a fight with another inmate.
Officials say it happened on Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m.
Sheriff Rosie Rivera said the fight started during breakfast time. The inmate, identified as Daniel Davis, 38, was unresponsive and transported to the hospital. He was pronounced dead later that evening, she said.
Sheriff Rivera said there was a full staff that day.
“We have a lot of inmates. We try to set it so they’re all safe, but with lunches, you know that’s time when there are more inmates out,” she said. “They were watching…you know, it’s a jail. There’s times that the inmates are going to get involved in an altercation,” she added.
Sheriff Rivera said the jail staff responded immediately.
The heartbroken mother of the man killed wants justice for her son.
“You think ok, my person is incarcerated, he’s going to be safe until it he gets released. It’s not true, it’s not true at all,” said Judy Davis, Daniel’s mother.
The South Salt Lake City Police Department is investigating the incident.
