SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (News4Utah) A former accountant from a Salt Lake research group who was charged with stealing $1.3 million from the company has died from an apparent suicide, according to court documents.

Daniel Scott Richardson, 36, was charged back in April 2018 in 3rd district court with 10 second-degree felony counts of theft and engaging in a pattern of unlawful activity after police said he made 180 unauthorized transactions that totaled just about $1.3 million.

Richardson worked for Pegasus research Inc. in Salt Lake City starting in 2012. The thefts started in 2013 and continued until 2016.

Documents state Richardson purchased vacations, cars and tens of thousands of dollars at Amazon, Pottery Barn and Apple.

The fraud was discovered by Richardson’s replacement after he was promoted within the company.

In a document filed with the courts on August 22, the case was requested to be dismissed as a result of Richardson’s suicide two days prior. His obituary was posted to permierfuneral.com.

*ABC4 does not normally report on suicides, however this was a pending criminal charge for $1.3 million that needed closure*
