LAYTON, Utah (ABC4 News) – A Layton man was charged with child abuse after police said he put an 18-month-old boy in the bathtub and failed to check the temperature of the water, causing second-degree burns to the lower extremities of the child.

According to charging documents Gaven Sydney Watson, 18, was upset with the child on Feb 9 after waking up to find the child had smeared feces in the child’s bedroom.

Watson said he turned both cold and hot water taps on, without checking the temperature of the water before yelling at the boy and placing him in the tub, documents state.

Documents further state Watson said the child was screaming, but he did not immediately notice the water was burning the child because he was talking to the child’s mother.

The mother pulled the child from the tub and realized that the child was injured. She took the boy to Primary Children’s Hospital where he was admitted to the burn unit with deep second-degree burns to his buttocks, genitals, legs, and feet.

Watson’s next court hearing is scheduled for June 3.
