MILLCREEK, Utah (ABC4 News) – Formal charges were filed after a homicide in Millcreek on February 18.

Wednesday, charges were filed against Tyler James Vernon for the murder of  61-year-old Steven Richard Nyce.

Officers responded to a residence near 1300 East 3770 South after they received reports a man screaming that someone had been injured.

That is when they saw Vernon outside in the street with a black rod over his head, according to charging documents. Officials said his hands were covered in blood when they found him.

Officers said that when they entered the home they saw Nyce lying in the front room with severe head trauma and no signs of breathing. Nyce was declared dead on the scene by the Unified Fire Authority.

A witness said she heard Vernon scream “his head is smashed in.” An officer stated that while on scene Vernon made several statements like  ” Oh my God I killed him,” “He is not breathing, “He was mocking me,” he was making fun of me.”

After an autopsy, the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death was a blunt and sharp force injury. His manner of death was ruled as a homicide.
