UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Police have arrested a man found with 18 pounds of narcotics while his 16-year-old son was in the car.

Detectives from the Utah County Sheriff’s Department stated that they attempted to stop a car driven by 44-year-old Jose Olegario Lopez for a traffic violation. Lopez refused to stop until his car was surrounded by other deputies and detectives.

Lopez was immediately arrested and searched. Officials say they found a small amount of cocaine in a coin pocket in Lopez’s pants.

After one of the K9 officers on scene indicated the presence of illegal drugs, detectives searched the car he was driving. Inside they say they found a sealed box containing many individually wrapped packages.

Some of the packages contained 2.35 pounds of cocaine. That’s a  street value of over $106,000.

The remaining packages were filled with 16.7 pounds of methamphetamine, over $750, 000 in street value.

Authorities said Lopez’s 16-year-old son was in the car with him when he was arrested but they do not believe that he is involved with his father’s possession and distribution of the drugs. The 16-year-old was later released to his mother.

Detectives found that Lopez is in the United States illegally after they contacted the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE agents confirmed the he has a record of eight years of aggravated re-entry violations, according to officials.

Lopez was booked into jail on two 1st degree felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; one 2nd degree felony charge of child endangerment; one 3rd degree felony charge of failing to respond to the command of a peace officer; and one class A misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

ICE Agents placed a hold on Lopez and a judge ordered that Lopez be held without bail, officiated said.
