Man arrested in connection with death of South Salt Lake police officer

SOUTH SALT LAKE (ABC4 News) – Investigators have arrested a second suspect in connection with a weekend event that ended with the death of a South Salt Lake police officer. 

Jeffery Black, 43, was taken into custody Monday evening in connection with the incident that claimed the life of Officer David Romrell. He faces charges of homicide, burglary, and obstruction of justice.

As Black was escorted out of the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office in handcuffs, he briefly said that he’s sorry Officer Romrell died. 

South Salt Lake Police responded to a 911 call reporting a burglary Saturday night at a business complex at 3575 West Temple. 

When officers arrived, they made contact with two suspects attempting to leave in their car. Officers pulled into the complex and exited their vehicles. Police said the driver of the car then accelerated at the officers, striking Romrell in the process.

Police opened fire on the car as it attempted to flee, shooting and killing the driver. That suspect was identified as Felix Anthony Calata, 32, of West Valley City. 

Romrell was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center in critical condition where he later died.
