WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Police have arrested a man wanted on a previous lewdness case after he allegedly exposed himself to another child, this time at a rec center in West Valley City.
Police said the incident happened on December 16. A father took his 8-year-old son to the rec center to go swimming and when the boy went to use the bathroom he told police he saw a man appear underneath his stall and could see his privates and he was pulling on it.
The father walked in and stated he saw this man on his knees looking at his kid in the stall then confronted him.
The suspect was captured on video surveillance leaving the scene with a friend.
Police were able to identify the man as Jonathan Soberanis, 23, and realized he currently had an active warrant for lewdness involving a child from West Jordan 3rd district court.
Soberanis was found outside his apartment complex but when police approached him, he said ” no” then took off running on foot. Police were able to chase Soberanis around the building and tackled him to the ground. A struggle ensued and officers were eventually able to place him in handcuffs.
Soberanis refused to give police his name and date of birth but he refused.
After being read his Miranda Rights, Soberanis admitted to being in the locker room using the urinal when he saw a kid in the stall and the kid was on the floor. He told police when he saw the kid he was “triggered”.
He said the boy’s father walked in as he was exposing himself to the child.
In a search of public records, ABC4 found Soberanis has a charge from 2015 where he plead no contest to a misdemeanor lewdness charge. The details of that incident were not available.
ORIGINAL STORY: (An arrest warrant had been issued in May and Soberanis had not been found until he was arrested for the new charge. He is still awaiting trial on the first incident.)
SANDY, Utah (News4Utah) – Police have identified and issued an arrest warrant for a man accused of lewdness involving a child.
Sandy police said Jonathan Jareth Soberanis, 23, is accused of exposing himself to a 9-year-old boy in a bathroom at The Shops at South Town in April.
“While his pants were down the male told the child to ‘come closer’,” police said.
The child told his mother what happened and pointed to the man. The woman got out her phone and snapped a photo of him.
According to court documents, the photographs were released to the media and several people responded and identified the suspect as Soberanis.
Both the boy and his mother identified Soberanis in a photo line-up that was presented later.
Police have tried to track down the suspect, but they say his whereabouts are unknown.
Investigators requested the arrest warrant because “there is a substantial likelihood of further danger to the community.”
The arrest warrant was issued for lewdness involving a child, assault and a violent offense committed in presence of child.
