SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) A dramatic change in the LDS church. Two priesthood bodies – the High Priests and Elders – will become one group in their local congregations. President Russell M. Nelson made the announcement Saturday night saying “In each ward, the High Priests and Elders Quorum will be combined into one Elders Quorum.”

The announcement was during the Priesthood session of the 188th Annual General Conference. President Nelson went on to say the issue had been under study for many months. He said the move was designed to “…greatly enhance the capacity and ability of men who bear the priesthood to serve others.” He added, “We have felt a pressing need to improve the way we care for our members and report our contacts with them…”

President Nelson went on to say we need to “strengthen our priesthood quorums to give greater direction to the ministering of love and support that the Lord intends for His Saints.” And he said that the changes are inspired of the Lord.

Expanding on this announcement Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said this change will help the Church’s organizations for adult men and adult women harmonize their ministering efforts.
