BOX ELDER COUNTY (News4utah) – Utah Highway Patrol said it is thankful for a semi driver who reported a fatal crash on State Route 30.
Troopers said the car went off the roadway, rolled and eventually came to rest down a slope where it was not visible from the roadway.
The crash happened on SR-30 near the Cache County, Box Elder County line. Troopers said a car, driven by William K. Atkinson, 48, of Logan, was traveling westbound in the outside lane when it drifted off the road to the right.
When it was completely off the roadway, the car veered back to the left. It came back onto the roadway and went across both westbound and eastbound lanes of traffic. That’s when the car went off the eastbound side of the road and down a slope before rolling in the field.
Troopers said Atkinson was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash. He was ejected from the car and killed.
The semi-truck driver reported the crash around 8:15 a.m., but when troopers arrived, they noticed it appeared it had happened earlier in the morning.
They said it likely happened between 4:30 and 5:30 a.m., but the car was not visible until the sun was up.
Troopers suspect fatigued driving to be the cause of the crash.
