OREM (News4Utah) – Take a trip back in time to see George Washington’s wallet or a letter from Abraham Lincoln. It’s part of the Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers exhibit at the SCERA Center in Orem.

The exhibit consists of authentic documents, photos, and artifacts belonging to local collectors Brent Ashworth and Reid Moon.

“We thought by seeing some genuine documents and artifacts, it might inspire somebody, even some young people maybe to dive into American history and know more about our country and its past,” said Ashworth.

“In school, sometimes history may not be the favorite subject for some of the young kids. But they will remember a few things and when they see these original artifacts, it inspires them and creates this proud patriotism,” said Moon.

Ashworth said visitors can see original letters from Benjamin Franklin, George and Martha Washington, John and Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James and Dolley Madison, Abraham and Mary Lincoln, and Paul Revere from his collection.

“I’m grateful that my grandchildren could be here and see the original documents signed by George Washington, letters by John Hancock, and even the cartoon Walt Disney had of Mickey Mouse,” said Pam Smith, an exhibit visitor.

Moon is displaying his early printing of Common Sense and the Federalist Papers and items of Mormon Heritage.

There is also an original stone facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, George Washington’s wallet, John Hancock’s watch and printed items by Benjamin Franklin, among other historic American artifacts.

“Museums like this, it brings to life this history. It’s like they say, ‘Those who forget history tend to repeat it.’ It’s important to learn from the mistakes in the past, but it’s also good to learn from the accomplishments of the past,” said Moon.

“We need to know who we are and where we came from so that we will know where we’re going. We have a heritage that is a grand blessing in our life and I want to preserve those feelings of love for our family,” said Smith.

The Founding Fathers and Founding Mothers exhibit is from July 2-4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Gallery 101 at the SCERA Center in Orem.
