SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – A local car dealer’s family made a huge donation to jump-start the expansion of Rice-Eccles stadium expansion.
Before Saturday morning’s red-white spring football game, the University of Utah announced that the Ken Garff family has pledged 17 and a half million to the project, which will build seating, suites and a patio in the south end zone to fully enclose the stadium and raise the seating capacity from 45,807 to 51,444.
Kyle Whittingham, Utes head coach said, “this is the final piece of the puzzle of this stadium…it’s already one of the best facilities in the country but this is just going to make it over the top and we really appreciate that. It helps us as a program on so many levels. It’s great for our players, our fans, the future recruits. There are so many positives attached to this.”
The new addition will be called the Ken Garff performance zone. Construction is set to begin after the 2020 football season and hopefully be finished for the kickoff of the 2021 campaign.
