Keeping animals cool in Days of 47 Rodeo

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – On Wednesday, the Days of 47 Rodeo kicks off at Utah State Fair Park, 155 1000 W — and it will be hot.

“These animals, I treat ’em just like an athlete, cause that’s what they are is an athlete,” said Owen Albrecht, the rodeo and ranch manager.

“If you look at the pens and stuff, we water ’em down, my kids come here and they’re watering them down,” he added.

But it’s not just water.

“They feed them Gatorade, they put electrolytes in their water, they’re constantly being sprinkled with water if it’s too hot,” said Tommy Joe Lucia, the rodeo’s general manager.

And, after the rodeo in recent years was held at Vivint Smarthome Arena, the rodeo has a new — outdoor — home.

“Rodeo belongs outside, it’s just like watching baseball under a top — it just doesn’t feel quite right,” said Lucia.
