January 5th is a deadly day for Utah officers

Provo officer Joseph Shinners’ death marks the 130th Utah police officer to die in the line of duty dating back to 1953.

January is one of the most deadly months for Utah officers with 15 deaths total.

Six of those deaths happened all on the same day as Shinners was killed–January 5th.

Officer Jared Francom of the Ogden Police Dept. died on January 5, 2012.

Deputy Josie Fox of the Millard County Sheriff’s Office died the same day in 2010.

Lt. James Merrill of the Cache County Sheriff’s Office died in 1974, Moab officer August Larsen in 1961, and Sgt. Thomas Stroud of the Salt Lake City Police Dept. in 1951.

Five of the six officers died from gunshot wounds.

Officer Shinners is the fourth officer from the Provo Police Dept. to die in the line of duty. The last was Deputy Constable Norman Kim Nisson in 1995.
