RIVERTON, Utah (News4Utah) – A horseback rider was killed after being struck by a teen driver in Riverton Monday night.

According to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray, the incident happened around 7 p.m. on 2143 W. 13800 South when 36-year-old Venancio Avila of West Valley was riding his horse and had to go around construction that put him and his horse in the middle of the road.

At that same time, Gray said a 19-year-old man was headed west and was believed to have been partially blinded by the sun and did not see Avila and the horse and struck them from behind.

The driver stopped at the scene and attempted to save Avila by performing CPR but the man succumbed to his injuries.

Gray said the horse was also critically injured and had to be put down.

This his still an active investigation but Gray said it is unlikely the driver will be cited and said this is just a tragic sequence of events.
