SANDY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Officials with the Sandy City Fire Department are considering a home a total loss after an early morning basement fire.

Chief Bruce Cline, with the Sandy City Fire Department, says 35 firefighters from 3 fire agencies responded to calls reporting backyard smoke at 1572 East Hidden Valley Drive around 3 a.m. Friday.

Chief Cline says firefighters discovered the fire started in the basement of the house and that the fire damages caused the basement to collapse.

The fire was fought defensively to ensure the safety of fire crews, Chief Cline says.

The cause of this fire is under investigation. Fire crews will remain on scene for most of the day to mop up and continue the investigation.
