Hiker’s rescue called ‘a miracle’

Local News
ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A man is in the hospital recovering Wednesday after falling more than 100 ft while hiking in Zion National Park. Park officials are calling his rescue a miracle.
The man in his early 20s was hiking with a friend on a Tuesday, descending Zion’s Lady Mountain, when he slipped near the summit.
“Fell about 150 feet, into a small rock ravine and was pinned in there,” said John Marciano, Zion National Park’s Public Information Officer.
The call came in at 8:40 in the morning on Tuesday and the rescue went into the evening with multiple agencies from Kane County, Springdale, LifeFlight, and the Grand Canyon Assisting Zion in the complex rescue.
“It was very dangerous for everyone involved,” said Marciano
“A shout out to the Search and Rescue team at Zion. They just don’t get enough credit for what they do,” said Daniel Fagergren, Chief Ranger at Zion National Park.
“They’re unsung heroes. These guys are like the Green Berets of the National Park Service,” said Marciano
The man was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center. His condition unknown at this time.
“When the patient left here in LifeFlight, he had life threatening injuries. So we don’t really know what his condition is at this point. He’s in the hospital, and he was conscious when he left here, so hopefully he’s alright and he’ll pull through.”
“I also want to thank the friend. I don’t think he gets enough credit. He was on scene with his buddy most of the day yesterday and I think he actually performed some life saving measures that was the difference between life and death.
He had a cell phone that was dying and had to actually move across a vertical face essentially quite a distance to be able to get cell coverage, talk to dispatch and then go back and check on his friend. He was back and forth across that face multiple times risking his own life,” said Fagergren.
