SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Highland High School is reinforcing the legacy of excellence of one of its former coaches.
Before the start of the boys’ basketball game against Olympus High School, Highland High School renamed its basketball gymnasium in honor of former Highland Boys’ Basketball Coach Larry Maxwell.
The gymnasium is now the Maxwell Gymnasium.
Larry Maxwell coached boys’ basketball at Highland High School from 1963 to 1994, leading the team to numerous victories and five state championships. He also led the boys’ tennis teams to state championships and became the fifth winningest high school basketball coach in Utah history.
Salt Lake City School District officials say Highland received an outpouring of support for the decision to rename the basketball gym because Maxwell’s influence reached far beyond the court.
