High speed chase ends after suspect runs out of gas

SANDY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – A man is in custody after he lead Unified Police on a chase through multiple cities and tried to assault one of their officers, police say.

According to Lt. Brian Lohrke with the Unified Police Department, officers spotted a man driving a BMW without a license plate near 7600 State Street in Midvale. When police tried to pull the man over he didn’t stop and lead police on a chase.

Officers tried to spike the BMW to make the driver come to a stop near 600 East Fort Union. Police say the driver didn’t stop. Instead he swerved the BMW and tried to hit one of the officers in the patrol car. 

According to Lt. Lohrke, the suspect lead police on a chase through Murray and West Jordan, and eventually came to a stop in Sandy near 10600 South and 200 East when he ran out of gas.

The man got out of the BMW and attempted to run from the scene. Lt. Lohrke said the suspect didn’t get far and was tased by police before being taken into custody.

Police are working to determine if the BMW was stolen. 

The suspect is facing many charges including assault on an officer and fleeing the scene.
