DUCHESNE COUNTY (News4Utah) – Search and rescue crews found a 6-year-old boy who was reported missing in canyon country south of Myton.

On July 6, Duchesne County deputies were dispatched to a missing person call near the end of Five Mile Road and Gate Canyon Ridge.

A man said he’d been searching for his grandson for about 30 minutes after the child wandered off but could not find him.

“(He) was very emotional but was able to show me the last footprint that he found,” said Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Carl Reilley.

Due to the 94-degree temperatures at the time and the extremely rugged terrain in the area, a medical helicopter was called to help in the search.

Sgt. Reilley and Sheriff David Boren followed the boy’s footprints and when the helicopter arrived they were able to share what direction the child’s tracks were heading.

After about 15 minutes, the boy was spotted from the helicopter about 6 miles from where he was last seen. The helicopter crew picked him and reunited him with his grandfather.

The boy was “tired and disoriented” but otherwise healthy said deputies.
