SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) – Over the weekend, campus police say a building under construction was vandalized with spray paint that included racial slurs.
Students received an email alert telling them about the vandalism.
It happened to a building under construction — the new Carolyn and Kem Gardner Building.
Police got the report early Monday morning, so they’re assuming the vandalism — which involved extensive graffiti on the first floor of the building — happened some time over the weekend.
“Any time we see vandalism and random acts like this, it’s usually kids ranging anywhere from 12 to 25,” said Dale Brophy, police chief with University of Utah Police.
“I can’t explain to you why people go in and destroy things for no apparent reason,” added Brophy.
“We’re going to do everything to find out who this was, and hold them accountable for what they did,” said Brohpy.
As the investigation continues, police say they will be reviewing surveillance footage from campus.
