Funeral services announced for fallen officer Shinners

PROVO (ABC4 News)- Funeral services have been announced for the Provo officer shot and killed Saturday night in Orem.

29-year-old Joseph Shinners was attempting to arrest a wanted fugitive identified as 40-year-old Matt Hoover at the Bed Bath and Beyond in Orem.

When officers attempted to take him into custody, a shooting occurred and Shinners was hit. He later died from his injuries.

He leaves behind a wife and a 1-year-old baby.

Hoover is facing charges in connection to his death.

Funeral services for Shinners will be held Saturday, January 12th at the Utah Valley University UCCU Center located at 800 West University Parkway. Services are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

The public is welcome to attend.

There will be a candlelight vigil for Officer Shinners Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Provo Police Dept.

A GoFundMe has been set up on behalf of the Shinner family.
