HENDERSON, Nevada (ABC4 News) – Weber County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of one of their former Lieutenants who died after being struck by a vehicle in Henderson, Nevada on Thursday.
In a post on the Weber County Sheriff’s Facebook, they said Lt. Marva VanSlate-Whitehead was struck and killed on December 20.
“It is with a very sad heart that we tell you of the death of one of our retired officers,” said the post. “Marva was an excellent Lieutenant who did her best for the Sheriff’s Office and it’s citizens. Marva, thank you for your years of service!”
According to the post, VanSlate-Whitehead had worked for Weber County Sheriff’s Office from 1990 to 2008.
Many of those who worked with her were devastated with the news.
In a press release issued by the Henderson Police Department, VanSlate-Whitehead struck and killed while crossing the street. Police said she was not in a crosswalk or intersection.
The 44-year-old driver who struck her was traveling eastbound in the right travel lane behind a white Ford F-150. Police said VanSlate-Whitehead initially walked in the path of the Ford, but the driver was able to stop. She continued walking into the travel lane of the Acura whose driver was unable to stop and struck her.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured and remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Preliminary investigation indicates speed and alcohol are not being considered factors in the crash.
