Former NFL player’s book disputes connection between football and head trauma

He played in the NFL for almost a decade–first for the Pittsburgh Steelers and then the Chicago Bears-before two back-to-back concussions forced him to retire early and end his career abruptly.

It was a long and painful recovery and because of his personal injuries on the grid, he became absolutely passionate about player safety.

Merril Hoge worked closely with USA Football to help create and implement the Heads Up Safety Protocols to help coaches teach safe playing techniques for all athletes. 

He testified before Congress in 2009 to help spread awareness about prioritizing player safety.

As a sports journalist for ESPN, he was on the front lines watching friends and former teammates suffer debilitating head injuries. 

His research led him to the discovery that there was so much that we still don’t know and there is no consensus in the medical community about what causes Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or how to even define it.  His research brought him to Dr. Peter Cummings and together they wrote a book: Brainwashed: The Bad Science CTE and the Plot to Destroy Football.

In an effort to set the record straight, the book explores the hidden agendas and misinformation fueling the CTE hysteria machine.
