Former NFL football player sentenced 15 years to life for murdering wife

PARK CITY, Utah (ABC4 News) A former professional football player was sentenced for the November 2017 murder of his wife.

Anthony McClanahan will serve 15 years to life, a judge said Monday.

McClanahan pleaded guilty to killing his wife at the Park Regency hotel on Prospector Ave. on November 2nd, 2017 where the couple was staying.

It was 2017 at a Park City hotel where Keri “KC’s” life came to an end.

Anthony McClanahan told police several men attacked his wife and he found her dead. It was a lie.

McClanahan spent most of his pro football career with Calgary Stampeders after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys.

Monday, he was a repentant murderer after pleading guilty to killing “KC.”

“I am writing to let you know that I am very sorry for my actions that day,” McClanahan told the judge from a written letter he wrote.

He was facing a mandatory 15-years to life in prison for his crime.

Despite stabbing his wife repeatedly he was asking for forgiveness.

“Hopefully, KC’s family can forgive me over time,” he said in court.  “(I want) to let everyone know I love my wife KC very much. She was my soulmate. She was my life.”

Afterward, KC’s sister was critical of the apology she heard in court.

“Pathetic, I think it was,” said Heather Gauf.  “Even the judge didn’t think it was not sincere in any way.  I think it’s more a mandatory thing.”

KC’s family was hoping McClanahan would spend the rest of his life in prison, but the plea deal prevented that.

Her sister said she left Arizona for a job in Washington state but the job didn’t start until that summer. She stopped in Park City and landed a job for the winter according to Gauf.  She was hoping to escape McClanahan who had become abusive.

“There were some signs and we’re all very afraid for her life,” said Gauf.  We never thought he could actually do something like this.”

But he did, leaving a family heartbroken and two children motherless.

“She had two amazing children that loved her very much,” said Gauf.  “She was an amazing mother.”

McClanahan will have to serve a minimum of 15 years in prison, but he could be spending additional time.  He is currently facing a child kidnapping charge in Salt Lake. He’s accused of taking KC’s own children without her permission.
