Former governor weighs in on big issues of the day

Local News
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC4 Utah) – Michael Leavitt, the former governor of Utah joined Inside Utah Politics to weigh in on some of the top political headlines in our state.

Leavitt, who went on the serve as the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, talked to Chief Political Correspondent Glen Mills about the battle over health care, Count My Vote initiative, President Donald Trump, Utah’s homeless issue and the public lands initiative.

As far as health care, Leavitt believes that the Affordable Care Act can be improved but right now republicans and democrats are locked into a partisan process that will play itself out.

“The debate currently, as we see it in D.C., really has centered around, as {senator John} McCain mentioned last week, is really more about winning a partisan victory because they’re arguing about words — is it going to be repeal and replace or are they going to say fix…”

In weighing in on the Count My Vote initiative and the race for the Third Congressional District, Leavitt said had there not been a Count My Vote initiative, “that decision of who would represent one-fourth of the Utah people in the house of representatives probably for 10 years would have been made by 350 people because the Republican party has repeatedly driven toward having decisions of that importance be made by smaller and smaller groups of people. So the big victory here for the people is that despite who might win, we’re having a primary and everyone’s vote counts and that’s a very important change that’s been made in our state.”

To hear where Leavitt stands on President Trump, our state’s homeless issue and the public lands initiative, watch the video above.
