Firefighters, community stand in support of Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett

PLEASANT GROVE (News4Utah) – Several fire departments have come out in full force to show their support for fallen Utah firefighter Battalion Chief Matthew Burchett.

The community held a ceremony on an Interstate 15 overpass on the day of Burchett’s funeral.

Dozens of firefighters from Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove were joined by police officers and residents to show respect for Chief Burchett as the procession made its way to Provo where he was buried.

The death hits home for the Pleasant Grove Fire Department because they had four of their own firefighters who were in California under Chief Burchett’s command during the Mendocino Complex Fire. They know it could have been one of their men lost as well.

The crews said they are overwhelmed with the amount of support seen from departments and residents around the state.

“I would expect nothing less than what you’ve seen. Across the board anywhere we go you can see that. Like I said we’re a brotherhood we’re a family. No matter where we’re at or what we’re doing we’ll support each other,” said Deputy Chief Andrew Engemann with Pleasant Grove Fire Department.

Several residents present on the overpass Monday said it was important to be here to show that residents care.
