Fire crews called after natural gas explosion in Orem

Local News

OREM, Utah (News4Utah) – Fire crews in Orem spent hours on scene of a gas leak which caused an explosion near State Street and 800 South.

All of the roads in that area have since been re-opened, but Dominion Energy could have to remain on scene for hours fixing it.

Officials said a construction crew struck the line and started the leak. It took more than two hours for Dominion Energy to get the gas shut off.

After putting the initial flames, firefighters had to remain on scene pouring water on the site to make sure the gas didn’t reignite.

Fire officials noted this situation could have been much worse.

“The gas leak and resulting fire occurred immediately. Had the gas leak been in process and then a source of fire introduced to it. We would have much larger explosion,” said Ryan Peterson Orem Fire Department Battalion Chief.

No one was hurt during the ordeal, but about seven nearby businesses were evacuated.
