Father who abandoned daughter on Ogden college campus avoids prison time

OGDEN, Utah (News4Utah)-  A man who abandoned his 5-year-old daughter avoided prison but must serve time in jail, a judge declared.

Adrian Sanchez pleaded guilty to child abandonment, a third degree felony after he left his daughter at the Ogden Weber Technical College in 2016.

His daughter was found by a security officer the next morning and was returned to her mother.

Back then her mother, Gina Weaver spoke to News4Utah after her daughter was home.

“She woke up and said she was extremely cold and started screaming ‘daddy, daddy,'” said Gina Weaver, the girl’s mother.  “She didn’t see her daddy. She didn’t see nobody.”

District court judge Mark Decaria sentenced Sanchez to prison for up to five years but suspended it Tuesday.

Instead he sentenced him to 120-days in the Weber County jail.  He was given credit for time served.  He also was granted work release, meaning he can go to his job but must return to jail once his shift is over.

He was also ordered to 60 hours of community service and placed on probation for three years.
