Father arrested after 2-year-old shoots self, dies

UPDATE: Police say the 2-year-old died early Tuesday morning. His identity has not been released. 


WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (News4Utah) – A father has been arrested for manslaughter after 2-year-old shot himself in a West Valley City home Saturday night.

West Valley City Police spokesperson Roxeanne Vainuku said the incident happened around 11:30 p.m. in a home on Fair Isle Lane (5700 West) when the boy was inside the home with another child and his father. 

The boy is not expected to survive and the child’s father, Tasman Maile, 27, has been arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for manslaughter for leaving a gun accessible to a child. 

Maile is also facing charges of possession of a weapon by a restricted person, drug possession and obstruction of justice.
