FanX appeals ruling in case with San Diego Comic-Con

Local News

SALT LAKE CITY (News4Utah) – The legal battle between San Diego and FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention isn’t over just yet.

San Diego Comic-Con International won a lawsuit last year claiming the then Salt Lake Comic Con had infringed on San Diego Comic Con’s name.

Since then, Salt Lake City’s convention has renamed to FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention. The jury awarded just $20,000 in damages and found no willful infringement, but the judge declared the case “exceptional” and ordered them to pay San Diego Comic-Con nearly $4 million.

FanX calls the judgment a “death sentence” and says immediate enforcement would destroy the company. FanX also contends the destruction of the company would be a blow to the local and state economy and result in the loss of millions of dollars in revenue.

FanX filed an appeal and Wednesday they requested a temporary pause on the enforcement of that $4 million ruling.
